A weary waggoner was driving his heavy wagon down a muddy road. The deeper the mud, the harder his horses pulled. But the wheels just sank deeper into the muck until the wagon was stuck fast in an oozing rut. “Hercules, please give me strength!” the waggoner cried up to the heavens. To his shock, the mighty Hercules appeared. But instead of freeing the wagon, Hercules said “Shoulders to the wheel, my friend. Help yourself and heaven helps you.” The man pressed his shoulder to the wheel while Hercules lifted from behind. The wagon budged, then rolled free of the rut to roll once more.
